John W. Frank, MD

June 2008

Dr. John Frank, Canadian social epidemiologist, long-time friend of the RWJ Health and Society Scholars Program, and an occasional guest lecturer to the Fellows, is moving to Edinburgh, Scotland on July 1, to take up the Directorship of a new Medical Research Council Unit, jointly funded by the Scottish Government -- the Scottish Collaboration for Public Health Research and Policy -- associated with a Chair at the University of Edinburgh. The Collaboration's mandate is to assemble trans-disciplinary teams of Scottish researchers to tackle the main public health problems that continue to dog Scotland's efforts to improve its historically poor health status, and major health inequalities.  Efforts will be focused on developing locally appropriate public health programs and policies for this purpose, evaluating them robustly utilizing the well-developed linkable administrative, demographic and survey databases in Scotland, and translating the results into sustainable interventions for the long term.

John can be reached for the next year or so through his former email address, john.frank@utoronto.ca, where he has since 2000, been inaugural Scientific Director of the Institute of Population and Public Health of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and a Professor of Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto.
